Addiction Rehabilitation Programs
Emerson Hospital offers a full range of drug and alcohol addiction services at our Concord, Massachusetts, Main Campus, including inpatient detoxification, consultation to patients on medical floors, a comprehensive addiction rehabilitation program and ongoing early recovery groups and self-help meetings.
Treatment Approach
Patients with addiction or substance abuse problems are treated with respect, have their confidentiality maintained and are provided a safe place to begin their recovery. We use an abstinence-based model, which presumes total abstinence is the best approach to assure long-term health and recovery.
Addiction clinicians complete an in-depth assessment that allows for a personalized and comprehensive treatment approach. They also work with patients to develop flexible treatment plans, integrating both professional care and self-help approaches. We recognize individuals vary widely in terms of motivation for treatment and life circumstances. An addiction clinician/case manager meets regularly with each patient, monitors progress, coordinates care and assists in planning for discharge and aftercare needs.
Inpatient Detoxification
We provide medical management of withdrawal symptoms ("detox") for patients with a dependence on alcohol, opiates or other physically dependent substances. Patients who may require detoxification are evaluated in the Polo Emergency Center where they receive a comprehensive medical screening as well as an evaluation by an Emergency Services clinician. The clinician will review treatment options and arrange for inpatient admission or other follow up as indicated.
Consultation on medical floors
Patients admitted to the hospital for medical reasons are sometimes determined to have concurrent addictions issues. An addictions clinician can see these patients with a referral from the attending physician. The clinician performs a full assessment, speaks with family or outpatient providers with consent from the patient and makes recommendations for follow-up care and referrals as indicated.
Addiction Rehabilitation Program
This group-based program is for those who are recently sober. It is designed to provide intensive support, knowledge and tools to assist patients in long-term recovery. The groups are psycho-educational and focus on better understanding the patterns and physiology of addiction, triggers to relapse, techniques and resources to avoid relapse and resources for ongoing support such as 12-step/self-help programs, individual or group therapy.
The program includes an orientation to various self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, SMART Recovery and Al-Anon. In addition to the groups, each participant has an individual case manager who meets with the patient and/or the patient’s family periodically through the program for additional support and to address individual issues. Each patient sees a psychiatrist within the first two days of the program, again near completion and during the program as needed.
Upon completion of the program, each patient leaves with a comprehensive Relapse Prevention Plan developed by the patient in consultation with their case manager. While in the program, participants are expected to abstain from all substance abuse and respect the confidentiality of other participants.
This intensive outpatient day program consists of three tracks:

Day Program – This intensive outpatient program meets five days a week from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. It includes four groups per day, four days per week. Then on Wednesdays, it consists of two groups, a presentation from an Alcoholics Anonymousrepresentative and a mid-day visit to a local AA meeting. It runs for five to ten days,

Half-Day Program – This intensive outpatient program meets three days a week from 9:00 am – 11:30 am. It is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, but alternative days and schedules may be arranged with your case manager. It includes two groups per day, is integrated into the full day group program and runs for two to four weeks.

Evening Program – This intensive outpatient program meets three evenings a week from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. It is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, but additional time in the program may be arranged with your case manager as clinically indicated. Each evening consists of two groups. It runs for a minimum of three weeks.
Self-Help Meetings
Other recovery groups and self-help meetings are held at Emerson Hospital, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Narcotics Anonymous and SMART Recovery.
